Equity in Advanced Placement Access in Connecticut
Connecticut's educational landscape reveals a troubling gap in access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses, particularly among underrepresented high school students. Despite the fact that the state boasts a relatively high rate of college readiness overall, significant disparities exist between different demographic groups. For example, data from the Connecticut State Department of Education indicates that only 25% of Black and Hispanic high school students enroll in AP classes, compared to 60% of their white counterparts.
The groups most affected by this inequity primarily include high school students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, where opportunities for rigorous academic preparation are often limited. These students face barriers ranging from a lack of available AP courses in their schools to insufficient encouragement and support from educators.
