Connecticut's rich history is a significant draw for artists, with 60% of the state's historic sites attracting visitors from across the country. However, interpreting and representing this history through art can be a challenge, particularly in a state with a complex and sometimes fraught historical narrative. Many artists in Connecticut face barriers in accessing historic locations and engaging local communities in their work. This funding opportunity addresses these barriers by providing residency spaces in historic locations and supporting collaborative projects between artists and local communities. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a clear connection between their work and Connecticut's history, as well as a willingness to engage with local communities. The state's historic sites, including the Mark Twain House and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, offer a unique backdrop for artistic exploration. Successful applicants will receive a $12,000 residency grant and access to historic locations throughout the state. The program will support 10 artists over the next two years, with a focus on creating new interpretations of Connecticut's historical narratives. Unlike neighboring Massachusetts, which has a more established network of historic sites and museums, Connecticut's program must navigate the challenges of a smaller, more dispersed cultural infrastructure. Connecticut's history is a defining feature of the state's cultural identity, and this program aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of this heritage.
